Historic & Stunning – Normandy, France

The history alone here is enough to take your breath away – in a good and somber sense. Add in the beautiful French countryside, I had to pinch myself when I woke up every morning while in Normandy, France.

The best time to visit is the anniversary of D-Day. All of the towns in Normandy have D-Day celebrations in the weeks leading up to the actual day on June 6th.

Besides a stunning landscape, Normandy has a such a huge historical story. During WWII, the Allied invasion of Normandy began the liberation of German-occupied Europe. Throughout the region and along the beaches, many memorials pay homage to the courageous undertakings of this time. These are reminders of the hardships endured and grand accomplishments of brave veterans.

The town of Sainte Mere Eglise has the biggest celebration each year in remembrance of D-Day. The townspeople and tourists honor the day with parades, reenactments, and festivals. Veterans are famed here (as they should be) and the history is not forgotten.

We flew in to the Caen airport, rented a car, and stayed in the heart of Bayeux at Le Lion D’Or Hotel. It hard to imagine the horrifying battles that once took place in the area while driving through the quaint and scenic countryside.

It’s a necessity to rent a car while in the area. Don’t miss visiting these places: Normandy American Cemetery, Pointe du Hoc Ranger Monument, and Omaha Beach.

Other than the D-Day celebrations, Normandy has much more to offer – Monet’s Garden, the charming town of Honfleur, and Mont Saint-Michel to name a few. Regardless of when you visit, the French countryside will lure you in making it difficult to imagine leaving!

  1. Beautiful place where a story is told by only a few remaining soldiers left…if you have a chance to hear it first hand, stop what you are doing and listen!
